Lake Barkley Flood Levels

By Angela Hatton

Grand Rivers, KY – Lake Barkley pool levels have reached near record levels as flood waters from the Cumberland River reach the region. Corps of Engineers Resource Manager Mike Looney says floodgates are steadily releasing water. Looney says the Corps has also established a sand bag levee to protect lakeside businesses from high winds today.

"This strong of a wind can push, y'know, 12 - 18 inch waves across the lake and the lake is high so there's no wave breaks anywhere, and to make sure those levees don't get over the top by waves."

Lake Barkley is expected to rise to nearly 370 feet by the end of the day. Looney says levels will stay steady through Sunday, and water will stay high through next week. So far, no homes have been threatened by the lake.
