Murray State University has announced a new Center for Agricultural Hemp that will focus on research, education and policy in the state's growing hemp industry.

The university in western Kentucky says the center will be administered by its Hutson School of Agriculture in coordination with industry partners.

University president Bob Jackson calls hemp an important agricultural commodity. Jackson says the new center will help the school continue its "role as a national leader in its renewal."

Supplier and manufacturer CV Sciences has been named as a foundational partner for the center.

The 2018 federal Farm Bill reclassified hemp as an agricultural commodity, allowing an expansion of the industry.

The center will focus on agronomy, cannabinoid science, agribusiness, hemp policy, agricultural hemp farming and other areas.
