A phased rollout of Kentucky’s new REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses will begin in April.
Woodford and Franklin counties will be the first to receive the new IDs. That’s according to a release from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Rollout for the remaining 118 counties will begin two to three weeks later and will conclude in June. According to the KYTC website, the county rollout will be announced in April.
Citizens can choose either a $43 dollar standard credential ID or a $48 dollar voluntary travel ID. The latter will allow citizens to board domestic flights and enter military bases when federal enforcement begins in October 2020.
Applicants can choose between a license renewal cycle of four or eight years until Spring 2023.
They will then only be offered in eight-year cycles.
Requests for new IDs must be made at Circuit Court Clerk’s offices.
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Deputy Executive Director of Public Affairs Jordan Smith said the IDs are more secure because production is centralized and applicant identities will be verified. “The actual cards, the actual credentials, they contain just about double the amount of security features that our current issue licenses and IDs have,” Smith said.
