Murray State University men’s basketball player Anthony Smith, a senior, is sidelined for the rest of the 2018-19 season after suffering an ankle injury.

A release from the Athletic Department on Wednesday said Smith’s injury will require season-ending surgery.

Smith started in all five games thus far in the season, averaged 7.6 points per game and led the team with 16 offensive rebounds.

Coach Matt McMahon said in the release the news is “heartbreaking” and said Smith is a “tough competitor with a tremendous work ethic.” He said he looks forward to Smith making a full recovery.

The Racers play Middle Tennessee on Saturday in Murfreesboro.

Matt Markgraf joined the WKMS team as a student in January 2007. He's served in a variety of roles over the years: as News Director March 2016-September 2019 and previously as the New Media & Promotions Coordinator beginning in 2011. Prior to that, he was a graduate and undergraduate assistant. He is currently the host of the international music show Imported on Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
