Influenza is now 'widespread' in the commonwealth. The Kentucky Department of Health raised the flu level from 'regional' to widespread Thursday citing an increase in flu-like activity or flu outbreaks in at least half of the state.

DPH commissioner Hiram C. Polk Jr. said in a release "now is a good time to protect yourself and your family by getting a flu shot.” He said those at high risk for complications related to the flu should get a vaccine at a local health departments or other providers.

According to the CDC, people at higher risk include young children, pregnant women, people over 50, those with extreme obesity and chronic health problems, caregivers and residents of nursing homes.

KDH said "adequate supplies" of flu vaccine are available this season.
