Father And History
Commentator Reynolds Price's father was never went to college, but he had a deep reverence and appreciation for history. The elder Price liked to introduce his son to people whose lives reflected the history of our country, including an "old aunt" who was part Indian and used to be a slave. He also introduced Reynolds to Eleanor Roosevelt and to Mrs. Woodrow Wilson.

Convention History
Co-Host Madeleine Brand and NPR's political editor Ken Rudin talk about three political conventions from history where crucial and unpredictable decisions were made: the Democratic Convention of 1860, the Republican Convention of 1912, and the Democratic Convention of 1944. The two earlier conventions are brought to life through dramatic recreation.
Canine History

Teaching History
Commentator Katherine Kersten says if we want to look for guidelines on teaching history in school, we should turn to the American Federation of Teachers "Education for Democracy" project, produced ten years ago. The document acknowledges that we spring from diverse cultural heritages, but says our poltical heritage is one....and she says a curriculum which teaches children to cherish freedom must necessarily focus primarily on Western civilization.
Concorde History
Linda talks with Jon Proctor, editor of Airliners Magazine, about the Concorde airplane. He says that Air France has not put as many miles on the planes as British Air, and that until now, the planes had a good service record.
Hebron History
NPR's Linda Gradstein looks at historical and religious strains in Hebron, and how those complicate Isreal's partial pullout the city. Muslims and Jews alike view it as the birthplace of their respective faiths, and neither side wants to withdraw an inch.
Zaire History
Deborah talks with experts about the history of Kisangani and Zaire, and the role the area played in the Cold War. Jeffrey Herbst, the director of African Studies and a professor of politics and international affairs at Princeton University, says that Zaire played an important strategic role when tensions ran high between the U-S and the Soviet Union. Michael Schatzberg (SHOTZ-burg), a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, discusses the connection between the nation's past rebels in Stanleyville and the current group of rebels who are challenging the authority of President Mobutu Sese Seko.
Preserving History
NPR's Kathy Lohr reports on efforts to preserve the country's dwindling number of Civil War battlefields. Sites like Kennesaw Mountain -- the last obstacle between General Sherman and Atlanta -- are in danger from suburban sprawl.
