Not Voting
Megan Williams of Youth Radio reports that while more and more young people are volunteering and taking part in public service -- many do not see voting as the best way to express their beliefs or influence others. The same kids out on the street making the voices heard, will not necessarily show up in the voting booth.
Concorde Crash Kills 113
NPR's Sarah Chayes reports that an Air France Concorde carrying German tourists to New York for a Caribbean cruise crashed outside Paris shortly after takeoff yesterday. At least 113 people died in the crash.
Political Attitudes Among Latinos
Latino USA's Maria Martin reports on the results of a survey of political attitudes among Latinos across the country. 1,000 Latinos were polled on campaign issues such as the economy, immigration policy, and gun control, among other things.
Senator Coverdell Dies at 61
From member station WABE in Atlanta, NPR's Joshua Levs reports on the sudden death of Georgia Republican Senator Paul Coverdell, who had been hospitalized over the weekend. He was 61.
The Robotic Milker
Chuck Quirmbach of Wisconsin Public Radio reports on the latest in dairy tech...the robotic milker. The automated system could boost milk production, as well as save a farmer's aching body from the demands of twice-a-day milkings.
New Cpr
NPR's Jon Hamilton reports that the American Heart Association has updated its guidelines for emergency treatment of heart attacks. Training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) has been streamlined -- and the technique is easier than ever. The heart association is also calling for wider use of emergency defibrillator machines.
Protesters
Conventions of major political parties and international organizations such as the World Bank often draw more media than participants. And the media, in turn, attract protesters seeking attention for their causes. This week in Los Angeles the streets will again be alive with marchers, but NPR's Aaron Schachter reports that not all of them will fit the familiar media stereotype.
Firestone
A class action lawsuit was launched today against Bridgestone/Firestone. It's likely to be the first of many such suits following the recall last week of more than six-million tires. The tires are suspected of causing dozens of road deaths and NPR's Jackie Northam reports the recall is sparking a fusillade of blame-trading.
Uruguay
When African slaves escaped from Brazil into Uruguay, they brought their Candomble religion and music, which metamorphosed into Condombe, a vibrant music embraced by black and white Uruguayans. It's now used in everything from the tango to protest songs. But some say Condombe's essence is being lost to commercialization. Reese Erlich reports.
Ford's New Plan
Jerome Vaughn of member station WDET reports on the move by Ford Motors to stop producing trucks and start producing tires at three of its plants -- this in response to the recall of Firestone-Bridegstone tires on some Ford trucks that was instituted last week.
