Science Program in Hawaii
Kayla Rosenfeld from Hawaii Public Radio reports on a science program in which middle-school students to do field research. This year it's based in Hawaii, where they're doing everything from tracking endangered species to chasing hot lava from volcanoes.

Spies and Embassies
The Russian Foreign Ministry today lodged a formal protest against the United States in response to the report of the tunnel under the Soviet Embassy. But it was not so many years ago that the United States was protesting the discovery of listening devices in the new American Embassy in Moscow. NPR's Tom Gjelten looks back on a tradition of eavesdropping that seems to have survived the Cold War.

NPR's Jennifer Ludden reports Palestinians in the West Bank town of Nablus are in no mood to compromise in the search for a peace settlement with Israel. They have rejected President Clinton's proposals and are vowing to continue their uprising to end Israeli occupation. They're also warning Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian Authority not to defy the will of the people.

Pandas
NPR's Mary Ann Akers reports on the public debut of the National Zoo's new pandas. The pandas arrived from China on December sixth, but their keepers gave the animals a few weeks to get used to their new surroundings before opening the exhibit to the public. The National Zoo paid China ten million dollars for a ten year loan of the pandas.

There's a new granite sculpture of the 32nd president in a wheelchair at the F.D.R. Memorial. It's an image President Franklin Roosevelt seldom shared with the public. President Clinton unveils the statue today. Alex Van Oss reports.

Diabetes Treatment
NPR's Patricia Neighmond reports on a new study showing that HMOs and other health plans save money when they provide comprehensive treatment to diabetics. The study, published in today's Journal of the American Medical Association, supports closely monitoring diabetics' blood sugar and aggressively controlling it with insulin or other drugs.

Jubilee Year Ends
Pope John Paul II closes out the jubilee year, shutting the door in St. Peter's Basillica that he opened to mark the beginning of the third millennium of Christianity. Some 25 million pilgrims have visited Rome this jubilee year, to reaffirm their commitment to the faith. NPR's Sylvia Poggioli reports.

English-Only Drivers
NPR's Nina Totenberg reports on a Supreme Court case that will decide if Alabama can deny a driver's license to someone who does not speak English. Lawyers for Mexican immigrant Marta Sandoval are arguing that Alabama's "English-only" driver's test violates the 1964 Civil Rights Act.

Kidnapping in Russia
Last week's kidnapping of "Doctors Without Borders" aid worker Kenny Gluck highlights the lawlessness that persists in Chechnya, even though Russian troops claim to have retaken the republic. There is evidence that both pro- and anti-Russian forces are active in the kidnapping business. Natasha Yefimova reports.

Florida Air Force Base
NPR's Phillip Davis reports that the Air Force has decided to keep a Florida runway to itself and to turn the rest of a controversial base over to surrounding Miami-Dade county. The Air Force set one condition upon granting the land: that it not be developed into a county airport.
