Virtual Cold Turkey
NPR's Debbie Elliott reports Mississippi has a new take on the reality TV craze: It's a Website where the world can watch four young smokers living for a week in an apartment trying to quit. The state is offering a cash prize to each member of the group who makes it through the week without lighting up. And the web audience gets to vote on activities that will make it harder or easier for them.
Russian Submarine
NPR's Mike Shuster reports that Russia today asked Britain and Norway for help in rescuing the crew of the submarine Kursk, which has been stranded for days at the bottom of the Barents Sea. Britain has airlifted a mini-sub to Norway, to be sent on to the crash site. The request for foreign help followed repeated, unsuccessful attempts by the Russians to dock a diving bell to the sub, to evacuate the more than 100 men on board.
Day Two at the DNC
NPR's Melissa Block reports on the second day of events at the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles. Last night's string of high-powered Democratic speakers include Jesse Jackson, Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, former US Senator and presidential candidate Bill Bradley and Congressman Harold Ford the youngest member of congress.
Poland & Communists
NPR's Julie McCarthy reports from Warsaw that a special tribunal today cleared former Polish president Lech Walesa of charges he collaborated with the communist-era secret police. The court ruled that in the early eighties, the Interior Ministry faked documents, casting Walesa as an informant, to undermine his chances of receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Thursday, the court also cleared the current president Alexander Kwasniewski, of similar charges of collaboration.
SEC Full Disclosure
NPR'S Jack Speer reports the Securities and Exchange Commission adopted a new rule today that should give individual investors better access to timely information. The SEC's new rule will require companies to publicly disclose important information at the same time it is shared with the analysts and brokerage firms on Wall Street. Brokerage firms remain opposed. They say the new rule will have a "chilling" effect on communication.
Reform Party Split
NPR's Andy Bowers reports from Long Beach, California, where the Reform Party convention has split in two. Supporters of Pat Buchanan control the convention hall. Yesterday they refused entrance to delegates for John Hagelin, so Hagelin's supporters moved to another site, at a theater next door. It now appears there will be two different Reform Party presidential candidates.

Disney Fraud
A Florida jury today ordered Walt Disney to pay $240 million in damages to two businessmen who alleged the company stole their idea for a sports complex. Disney denied using anyone else's idea for the Wide World of Sports complex at Walt Disney World in Orlando. But the six-member jury found the company guilty of fraud, theft of trade secrets and breaking a confidential relationship. NPR's Phillip Davis reports.
A Kennedy to Stand Trial for Murder
NPR's Tovia Smith reports on the decision by a Greenwich, Connecticut judge that Michael Skakel, Ethel Kennedy's nephew, can stand trial for the murder twenty-five years ago of a 15-year old neighbor. It's still undecided, however, whether Skakel will be tried as an adult or a juvenile, and the penalties are vastly different.
