Phillipine Peace Treaty
NPR's Julie McCarthy reports that Philippine President Fidel Ramos today met the leader of a Muslim rebel group today to confirm their agreement to end fighting that has troubled the predominantly Christian country for centuries. Both men endorsed a peace plan in which voters will decide whether to enlarge an autonomous region aimed at preserving Muslim religion and culture.

. Stalking Legislation
NPR's Adam Hochberg reports on a challenge in South arolina to a new federal law that makes it harder for individuals to get river's license records from state motor vehicles offices. The federal law is eant to prevent stalkers from getting information on their intended victims, ut the South Carolina Attorney General believes the matter should be dealt with n the state, rather than the federal level.
Soup Kitchens Bad For Biz
Veta Christy reports that Hartford, Connecticut has approved an ordinance that severely restricts the number of shelters, soup kitchens and other such services within the city...arguing they attract the poor. That claim is disputed by welfare workers. About 30 cities have similar laws, but none is as far-reaching as Hartford's.

Nobel Lit Prize
This morning, the Swedish Academy announced the winner of this year's Nobel Prize in Literature. This year's winner was Wislawa Szymborska, a 73 year-old Polish poet who's well-known in Poland and Germany and whose works have been translated into several Asian languages...but who's little-known in the United States. NPR's Dean Olsher reports.

Hemophilia Deadline
Today is the deadline for hemophiliacs who acquired AIDS from tainted blood products to join a class action suit that would gain them 100,000 dollars in compensation. Critics of the settlement say this class of AIDS patients is being railroaded into accepting less money than they might receive from individual lawsuits. NPR's Vicky Que reports.

Bhutto Turmoil
- Danile talks with BBC reporter Phil Goodman in teh Pakistani capital of Islamabad. Last week, the brother of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was killed. He is was the second of her brother's to die suspiciously. Her father was over thrown as that country's leader and hanged Goodman says the killing of her brother, who was a political rival of Ms. Bhutto, may be enough to prevent her from running for re-election in 1998.
Christiania
Reporter Bob Garfield visits the "free city" of Christiania in Denmark...an enclave of squatters who set up housekeeping in an abandoned Army installation in the midst of Copenhagen. The city was established twenty-five years ago today, and we'll find out how this small "city-within-a-city," designed to be free of rents, taxes, and drug laws, has endured...and how it has changed.

Hebron
NPR's Linda Gradstein reports from Hebron on the volatile mood in that West Bank town, which was one of the focal points of the disappointing Middle East peace summit at the White House this week. The Palestinians had hoped that Yasser Arafat would secure a commitment on a date for the much-postponed Israeli withdrawal from the city. He didn't, and as a result, the general expectation is that there will be more trouble to come.

A non-partisan research group has some surprising conclusions about who gets welfare money, how long they stay in the system, and why they don't have jobs. NPR's John Nielsen reports the study contradicts many statements made in the debate that surrounded the welfare reform act that Congress passed and President Clinton signed.
