NPR's Jon Hamilton reports on a study in this week's New England Journal of Medicine on a gene mutation that causes people to store too much iron. The gene is thought to have evolved in Europeans at a time when people weren't getting enough iron, but now it's key to a condition called hemochromatosis, which can lead to life-threatening problems.

North Country Public Radio's Brian Mann reports on the rigors faced by prison guards. Expanding prisons and high-turn over has increased demand for guards, but the men and women who take up the profession face violence and threats everyday. While officers rarely mentioned their experiences in the past, they're now speaking out as they lobby for higher pay and more respect.

No issue has been more of a flashpoint in Florida's recount of presidential ballots than the disallowing of overseas absentee ballots from military personnel. Hundreds of ballots arrived lacking postmarks, voter signatures or signatures by witnesses needed to authenticate the ballot. Local officials said they treated these defective ballots just as they have in past years, but this year every ballot has become a potential battleground. NPR's Steve Inskeep reports.

NPR's Richard Knox reports from Boston where officials from 24 African nations came together last week to discuss the future of AIDS care in their countries. Pharmaceutical companies have pledged to lower the price of AIDS drugs for the poorest nations, where the rate of infection can reach as high as one in four people.

NPR's Jennifer Ludden in Jerusalem reports Israeli helicopters rocketed Palestinian police and security offices across the Gaza Strip Monday, in retaliation for the roadside bombing of an Israeli bus that left two dead and several others wounded, including schoolchildren. The Palestinian Authority and Yasser Arafat's Fateh faction denied responsibility for the bombing, but a senior Israeli official said the "Palestinian military establishment" was linked to the attack.

NPR's Don Gonyea reports on Vice President Al Gore's response to Florida's vote certification. Gore gave a short speech last night, making his case for a complete and fair tally in Florida. Gore has also received support from the Congressional Democrats in contesting of the vote certification. Meanwhile, Republicans George W. Bush and Dick Cheney proceeded with their transition plans.

NPR's Larry Abramson reports on the expansion of Internet addresses. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has chosen the new addresses, which will come after the "dot." The new names include: dot-biz; dot-name; dot-info; dot-museum; dot-coop; dot-aero; and dot-pro. Existing suffixes include dot-com, dot-org, and dot-net.

NPR's Don Gonyea reports about the many events which have occured today as the Gore and Bush camps battle in court over the Florida Presidential Election count. Early in the day, a Florida Distict judge decieded the Florida Secretary of State could certify the election results without including results from handcounts proceeding in some counties. Late in the day, the Fla. Supreme Court delayed such action.

For the recording industry, the development of the technology that allows music to be shared via the internet has turned out to have a sting in its tail. Many more people are listening - but they're not paying for the pleasure. NPR's David Kestenbaum reports on the industry's efforts to prevent unauthorized copying of its merchandize by using something called a 'digital watermark' - and the attempts by critics to shpow it doesn't work.

NPR's Vicky O'Hara reports President Clinton had separate meetings with the leaders of Russia and South Korea today, on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific summit in the oil-rich Sultanate of Brunei. Questions about the still unresolved U.S. presidential election followed Mr. Clinton to the summit. He urged everyone to follow the lead of the American people, and simply await the outcome.
