Supreme Court
NPR's Barbara Bradley reports on Bush and Gore briefs filed with the U.S. Supreme Court in Washington today. Bush attorneys say the Florida Supreme Court overstepped its authority in extending the deadline for counties to submit their vote totals. Gore attorneys say the US Supreme Court would overstep its authority to set aside the Florida court's interpretation of state law.
Brain Cell Discovery
The ethically disputed practice of restoring damaged brain cells by using fetal nerve cells could soon become obsolete. New research indicates bone marrow cells may cause the same brain cell regeneration produced by fetal cells. This could bring new hope to victims of diseases that affect the nervous system, such as Huntington's Disease. NPR's Joe Palca reports.
Election - Congressional Democrats
NPR's Brian Naylor reports on the efforts made by Joe Lieberman today to keep Democratic ranks on Capitol Hill solidly behind Al Gore's effort to contest the election. Yesterday's ruling by a Leon County circuit court judge was seen as devastating for Gore, but Lieberman's message to his fellow Democrats was to stay with the vice president until the Florida Supreme Court hands down its ruling.
War Loot
The U.S. Customs Service today returned an Italian Renaissance painting looted from Germany at the end of World War Two, probably by a U.S. soldier. The five-million-dollar painting was returned to German officials. Customs also used the occasion to announce that it will devote more of its' resources to the recovery of stolen art. From New York, David D'Arcy reports.
Democratic Reaction
NPR's Brian Naylor reports from the Capitol on Democratic reaction to Al Gore's continued legal pursuit of the presidency. Right now, Democrats seem united in their support of the Vice President, but many are also considering how they'll work with a Bush administration. With the Senate split evenly down party lines, party leaders say they'll expect to share power with the GOP in any case.
Super Corn
NPR's Cheryl Corley reports on Starlink, a genetically engineered corn which has been approved for livestock feed. The corn became the pariah of grains earlier this year when it made it's way into human food. Starlink contains a protein that could cause allergic reactions. The EPA is still considering if the corn is safe for human consumption, a situation that's upset environmentalists and put many farmers in a bind.
France - Justice Strike
NPR's Sarah Chayes reports from Paris that while certain American lawyers and court workers are working overtime this week, their French counterparts have been on strike. French public defenders are demanding higher pay, and court clerks there, as well as some magistrates, want the government to hire more personnel and lighten their workload. The strikers held a noisy demonstration in Paris today.
Democratic Mood
Democratic legislators have rallied behind the presidential campaign of Vice President Al Gore in recent days, defending his decision to contest the results of the election in Florida. But as the post-election fracas reaches into its fourth week, questions about endurance are inevitable. How long can Gore's intraparty support structure hold up? NPR's Peter Kenyon talked with Democratic members of Congress and filed this report.
Recount Developments
NPR's Brian Naylor reports from Tallahassee on the latest developments concerning Florida's vote recounts. A circuit court judge has ordered all the ballots from Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties brought to him by 5pm tomorrow, but he hasn't said whether they'll be re-counted. Meanwhile, the Republican tate legislature considers whether it should select electors.
Transition
NPR's Pam Fessler reports on the continuing process of shifting from the Clinton administration to the Bush or Gore administration. At the White House today, current staff met to talk about they can do to prepare for the new president. Dick Cheney held a news conference about the transition he's planning on behalf of George W. Bush. Al Gore met with his aides in his vice presidential office in the White House complex.
