NPR's Mark Roberts reports on a drama that's moved offstage in Boulder, Colorado and before the city council. A recent ordinance bans smoking in public places, and a few theater-goers filed complaints after actors lit up onstage during a performance of "Grand Hotel" at a dinner theater. The city says the law's the law; the theater claims it's censorship. The city council is set to take up the issue today.

A study released today suggests that the risk of becoming infected with the AIDS virus through oral sex may be higher than previously realized. The study, being published in the journal Science, found that monkeys exposed orally to the monkey equivalent of the AIDS virus became infected surprisingly easily. Experts say that while transmission of the AIDS virus through oral sex is probably relatively rare, the findings underscore the need to practice safe sex. NPR's Joe Neel reports.

The Democratic National Committee has released 10-thousand pages of documents relating to former fundraiser John Huang. The papers were subpoenaed by Congressional investigators who are looking into improper donations. Among the memos is a list of so-called "must considers," the rolls of party fundraisers that the DNC urged the incoming Clinton administration to consider for jobs. Huang was included on the lists for jobs at the Treasury, State and Commerce Departments. NPR's Peter Overby reports.

Remember the U.S. Embassy in Moscow scandal? During its construction, Soviet workers filled it with so many bugging devices, the US abandoned the project in the mid 80s. After a decade of finger pointing and political wrangling, a 100% American work crew has begun tearing down part of the Embassy building ....the first stage of a 250 million dollar renovation. NPR's Andy Bowers reports from Moscow.

Beth Fertig of member station WNYC reports that some members of the New York City press are having difficulty getting certian kinds of information out of the Mayor's office. New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is enjoying immense popularity in the city as a result of programs that have reduced crime and improved the overall quality of life...but there are concerns that his administration is making it difficult to get information that is less than positive about the programs that Giuliani has implemented.

NPR's Mary Kay Magistad reports from Hong Kong that though human rights groups are critical of the chinese designated chief executive's gutting ot Hong Kong's civil liberties laws, old time expatriate businessmen insist they are not concerned about Hong Kong's future once it reverts to Chinenese rule July 1. These businessmen say they believe China recognizes the economic importance of Hong Kong and that they expect it will be business as usual.

NPR's Don Gonyea reports on this morning's reopening of a main bridge linking Grand Forks, North Dakota with East Grand Forks, Minnesota. The bridge had been closed since April 18 and its closing meant a drive of more than 150 miles just to get across the Red River. Many people who had been trapped on one side of the river were reunited with their families and co-workers today.

-- NPR's Eric Westervelt reports on the summit on volunteerism continuing today in Philadelphia. Yesterday President Clinton, two of his predecessors, Vice President Gore, and six thousand other volunteers cleaned up an inner city neighborhood...today delegates begin working on developing ways to get people more involved in their communities. Meanwhile, protesters and observers don't believe that volunteers can perform all the tasks set out for them.

GOP leaders unveiled their list of legislative priorities today, two months after the start of the congressional session. Speaker Newt Gingrich and other top leaders were trying to answer claims that, compared to the start of the last session in 1995, this Congress has done little. The list of Republican priorities begins with balancing the federal budget, and also includes tax relief and a ban on certain late-term abortions. NPR's Brian Naylor reports.

Outgoing Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole lost in a bid to pass a balanced budget amendment today. He brought the issue up for a vote, knowing the Democrats would not help him get the two-thirds margin required. But Dole forces consider the loss a plus. The Dole presidential campaign will accuse President Clinton and the Democrats of not being serious about wanting a balanced budget. NPR's Peter Kenyon reports on today's debate.
