Germany Demonstration
NPR's Guy Raz reports that tens of thousands of Germans demonstrated today in Berlin against a recent upsurge in neo-Nazi violence. German President Johannes Rau addressed the crowd, and the chief rabbi of Berlin offered a prayer for Jews who died in the Holocaust. Today, November 9th, is a date of great symbolism for Germans. In 1938, Nazi thugs went on a rampage, smashing Jewish shops and synagogues. On this date in 1989, the Berlin Wall was breached.
Human Study
Despite numerous waves of migrations that have swept across Europe in the recent past, from the Huns to the Mongols and a host of others, most European men are descended from Stone Age settlers who populated Europe nearly 40 thousand years ago. The information is based on genetics rather than archaeology. It comes from studying the Y chromosome, a genetic element that's passed strictly from father to son. NPR's Joe Palca reports.
U.S.S. Cole Investigation
NPR's Tom Gjelten reports that Senior Pentagon and Administration officials defend the decision to send the U.S.S. Cole to refuel in Aden, Yemen where the ship was attacked. The officials say that U.S. Navy ships had refueled in the Yemeni port dozens of times before. They say there had been no special security alerts to warn against such refueling stops.
Alzheimers's Disease
NPR's Wendy Schmelzer reports that doctors from Duke and Johns Hopkins University have found a correlation between head injuries incurred during young adulthood and Alzheimer's Disease. Their findings are published in the latest issue of the journal, Neurology. The doctors examined the records of more than 500 World War II veterans who were hospitalized with head trauma. They found a slight increase in the occurrence of Alzheimer's with those veterans who suffered serious head injuries.
Black Vote
African-Americans are traditionally among the Democrats most loyal voters, with more than 8-in-10 voting for the party nominees in recent presidential elections. But blacks are less likely than whites to vote. In an election as close as this, turning up the turn out among African-Americans is a top priority for Vice President Al Gore's supporters. From Chicago, NPR's Phillip Martin reports on the get-out-the-vote effort, and the Republican's parry.
Mexican Trucks in US
NPR's Kathleen Schalch reports an international arbitration panel will decide if the United States has violated a provision in NAFTA that would allow Mexican trucks on all U-S Highways. The dispute, between Mexico and the US centers on whether Mexican trucks are so unsafe as to pose a threat to US motorists. If the arbitration fails to resolve the problem, the two countries could impose trade sanctions and tariffs on each other.
Recount Controversy
NPR's Howard Berkes reports a judge assigned to hear arguments dealing with the vote recount in Palm Beach County had to remove himself from the cases yesterday. The judge has been accused of saying voters who claim they did not understand the ballot there were stupid. The judge denies the charges. Its just another in a growing number of controversies surrounding the recount in Florida, and delaying the official announcement of who will receive the states 25 electoral votes.
Stamps: 34 cents
NPR's Jack Speer reports on the latest one-cent stamp hike by the U-S Postal Service. Starting in January, first-class stamps will cost 34 cents. That extra penny will mean a billion dollars a year in revenue for the Postal Service, which is just emerging from years of debt. Many consumers, still complaining about the last stamp hike in 1999, are using email and electronic bill paying services.
Neo Nazis In Berlin
The far-right National Democratic Party marched through the streets of Berlin to demonstrate against the German government's proposal to BAN the party outright. About 2000 neo-Nazi protesters were met by thousands of COUNTER-protesters. The demonstration is the fifth major rally the party has held in Berlin this year and, as NPR's Guy Raz reports, tension between the two sides nearly escalated into violence.
Time Warner/AOL Merger
NPR's Emily Harris reports on concerns over the proposed merger between Time Warner and America Online. In an effort to win Federal Trade Commission's approval, Time Warner has agreed to offer AOL's Internet rival, Earthlink, access to high-speed web services over its cable system. But smaller Internet companies are now worried they'll be shut out from the service. (
