Air Quality
Within the next week, the EPA is expected to propose new, more stringent health standards for two of the most common and pervasive air pollutants -- ozone and small particles. Stricter standards could force tighter pollution controls on everything from cars to power plants to woodburning stoves. NPR's David Baron reports that there is a growing debate on what constitutes a "safe" level of these pollutants -- and that industry and environmental groups are already launching intensive lobbying campaigns.

Mom, Dad, & Big Brother
NPR's Margot Adler reports that an industry is springing from the premise that teenagers are dangerous. There are gadgets that beep if your teen drives over the speed limit; machines to prevent your car from starting if the driver has alcohol on his breath; hair analysis kits that will let you perform drug tests on your kids. All of these products of parents' fears are invasive, and a few may be unconstitutional, but they're proliferating.

Dallas Cowboys
Two members of the Dallas Cowboys football team are being investigated on charges of sexual assault. A twenty-three year old woman has accused offensive lineman Erik Williams and wide reciever Michael Irvin of assaulting her. The investigation is the latest in a series of legal troubles for members of the Dallas Cowboys. Glenn Mitchell of member station KERA in Dallas reports on the charges, and what they might mean for the Cowboys, who are preparing for Sunday's second-round playoff game against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte.
Biometric Id Technology
You can lose your wallet, you can forget your PINs and passwords, but you can't lose your fingerprints or the sound of your voice. NPR's Dan Charles reports that new technologies are taking advantage of these built-in identifiers to develop fool-proof methods for making sure you are who you say you are. Some critics worry they also make it too easy to invade one's privacy.

Teen Prostitution
NPR'S Mary Kay Magistad reports that the rate of HIV infection is increasing rapidly in Cambodia, especially among prostitutes. The increase in AIDS in Cambodia has created a boom in prostitution among young girls, many of whom are being forced into the job because of the AIDS scare...since many people believe that younger girls are less likely to be HIV positive. Health care officials in Cambodia say that these young girls are actually most at risk for contracting the disease.

Golan
Robert talks with Hirsh Goodman, editor-in-chief of the Jerusalem Report, about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's defiant statement today that Jewish settlements will continue to grow. Netanyahu said this while visiting Ariel, a large settlement on the West Bank, also pledging that no settlement would be uprooted to satisfy Arab demands. Goodman says the Prime Minister is placating right-wing voters who were instrumental in getting him elected earlier this year.

French Strike
NPR's Michael Goldfarb reports on the 10-day-old trucker strike in France. The strike tactics, including roadblocks on highways and at truck fueling stations, have resulted in fuel rationing in some areas, closed factories and an interruption to the supplies of perishable goods. Overnight, the union and trucking companies reached an agreement to allow truckers to retire at age 55 after 25 years employment. Still to be settled are trucker demands for higher pay and shorter working hours.

Zaire
NPR's Jennifer Ludden reports on the intense political crisis gripping Zaire, one of Africa's largest nations. A rebellion which began several weeks ago in the east of the country is steadily spreading, and Zaire's underpaid and poorly disciplined army is putting up very little resistance. To compound the problem, President Mobutu Sese Seko (mo-BOO-too SAY-SAY SAY-koh) has been out of the country for months, as he recuperates from cancer surgery on the French Riviera.

Killers Among the Returnees
NPR's Jennifer Ludden reports that among the roughly half million refugees returning to Rwanda are some of those who carried out the 1994 genocide there. Survivors of the massacres against Tutsis and moderate Hutus are now faced with the dilemma of how to deal with returned neighbors who killed their relatives. We meet one woman who searches for her family's killers, and finds the murderers' mother and brother.

OJ Plaintiffs List
NPR's Mandelit Delbarco reports that the plaintiffs have rested their case in the civil trial of OJ Simpson, accused of the "wrongful deaths" of his former wife, Nicole, and her friend Ronald Goldman. The final witness for the plaintiffs was Fred Goldman, father of victim Ron, who testified to the tremendous pain his son's death has caused him. Now, the defense will take over, and is expected to focus on demonstrating flaws in police work following the murders.
