The Justice Department asks a federal judge to throw out the terror convictions of a group of Detroit men who Attorney General John Ashcroft had portrayed as an al Qaeda sleeper cell. The department says its own prosecutors made enough mistakes to warrant a new trial, on charges of document fraud. NPR's Libby Lewis reports.

The Senate ends the prospect of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, at least for this year. An attempt to cut off debate and proceed to a vote on the amendment won the backing of less than half the Senate, far short of the two-thirds needed to approve the amendment itself. Six Republicans voted with Democrats, defeating the effort 50-48. NPR's David Welna reports.

One Thai woman, Krisana Kraisintu, took on government officials and multinational pharmaceuticals to make this drug availability possible. Now she's setting her sights on Africa's AIDS crisis. The Government Accountability Office says that more than three-quarters of major deficiencies and errors at hospitals are not found during normal accreditation reviews. A new report from the GAO says the private agency that inspects hospitals for the Medicare program often misses vital patient safety lapses and important fire safety problems. Federal Reserve policy-makers will likely approve a small increase in the short term interest rates it controls. The economy has been heating up and the Fed wants to keep inflation from getting out of hand. If the Fed does move tomorrow it will mean that a long period of historically low interest rates is coming to an end. NPR's Jim Zarroli reports.

Iraq's interim government details its plan to take custody of ousted ruler Saddam Hussein on June 30. Iraq's national security advisor says the exchange will be televised, featuring an American soldier who will hand over Hussein to an Iraqi policeman, who will handcuff and take charge of him. The Roman Catholic archdiocese of Portland, Ore., announces plans to file for bankruptcy. Archbishop John Vlazny said the church's action is a response to two sexual abuse lawsuits seeking more than $160 million. The archdiocese has already paid millions to settle other abuse claims. The bankruptcy is the first by a Catholic diocese in the United States. NPR's Barbara Bradley Hagerty reports.

The day the United States handed over sovereignty to Iraq's interim government, an Oregon National Guardsman witnessed Iraqi soldiers beating Iraqi prisoners. He and other guardsmen intervened, but were later ordered to return the prisoners to their Iraqi captors and walk away. Iraq's new interim government is announced, with Sunni leader Ghazi al-Yawer named as the country's president. Al-Yawer was previously a member of the U.S.-appointed Governing Council, which dissolved itself after the choices were made final.
