RYERSON and the staff are putting out the paper during the floods, without running water or electricty; they work in daylight with pencils and typewriters. RYERSON was in the unique position to report on the near fistfight between the Des Moines mayor and its city council over the right time to turn on the city's water supply.

2: Sporswriter and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, JIM MURRAY. He's just written his autobiography (Macmillan) about his five decades in journalism: as a young reporter for Time magazine following the 1952 presidential campaign and the rise of Richard Nixon's political career; working as one of the original writers for Sports Illustrated; and beginning in 1961, as sports columnist for the Los Angeles Times. His syndicated column once reached 200 newspapers a day and he has won the Sportswriter of the Year award a record 14 times.

Columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, STEVE LOPEZ. His first novel, "Third and Indiana" (Viking), was published in September. It's about life in Philadelphia's "Badlands." The origin of the story was a two-paragraph item LOPEZ read in the paper about a 14 year-old boy shot and killed on a drug corner in North Philadelphia. NPR's John Burnett reports on how former President George Bush's resignation from the NRA has affected other members of the organization. This past week, Bush wrote a letter of resignation from the group saying he was offended by comments from one NRA leader who referred to federal agents as "jack-booted thugs" and compared them to Nazis. NRA members have had a variety of reactions to Bush's move with some agreeing that the rifle association has gone too far while others just say "good riddance" to the former president.

In covering the Thomas/Hill Judiciary Committee hearings some conservative senators accused TOTENBERG of ruining the lives of both Thomas and Hill. TOTENBERG also brought the fact that Judge Douglas Ginsburg had smoked marijuana into the public eye, costing him a Supreme Court nomination. TOTENBERG's reports regularly for "Morning Edition," "Weekend Edition," and "All Things Considered."

Broadcast journalist JOHN MERROW. He's the anchor and Executive Editor of "The Merrow Report" a quarterly series of documentaries on PBS that examines education and surrounding issues. Their latest documentary is "Attention Deficit Disorder: A Dubious Diagnosis?" In the documentary MERROW disputes the widely held belief that Ritalin, the drug given to children with Attention Deficit Disorder, is not "dangerous and addictive." MERROW also found that the drug has been overprescribed, and that some kids have begun to abuse it. NPR's Melissa Block reports from New York City on author alter Mosley's new book, "R.L.'s Dream". The book is currently in stores, W.W. Norton & Company, 1995) and a film version of one of his earlier novels, Devil in a Blue Dress," is about to be released in theaters around the nation. osley has gained notoriety for his Easy Rawlings mystery series, but he has hanged pace in his latest novel, which instead focuses on the essence of the lues. Melissa Block visited the author in his apartment to find out more about osley's recent change in genre.
Watsonville, Ca
Reporter Chris Arnold visits the Pajaro Valley School District in California, where the white, wealthy town of Aptos (AP-toss) wants to set up a separate school district, which would leave out the poor, largely-Latino town of Watsonville. Aptos parents and some school officials say they could get better quality education for their students in a smaller, less bureaucratic setting, but many residents feel this split will tear their community in two at a point when Latino and white students should be encouraged to mix. The hurt feelings in the district is something many schools are going through in California and elsewhere as parents and educators look for avenues to improve education thru local control.

Sandy Tolan reports that the presidential campaign of commentator Pat Buchanan has attracted a broad array of followers in Arizona, which holds its Republican primary on Tuesday.
