has joined a Chicago suburb in opposing a lawsuit which contends that private contractors who work for the government should have the same protection from political hiring and firing as do many public employees. He's asking the Supreme Court to reverse a 1990 ruling that declared the state's political patronage system unconstitutional.

being put into place for the Summer Olympic Games. A huge force will provide protection for athletes, official, and visitors. It includes 15-hundred members of the Atlanta Police Department, 600 officers from the State of Georgia, a private security force numbering several thousand, and a large number of federal agents.

Former White House counsel Bernard Nussbaum took responsibility for the file transfer...but most of the hearing was spent grilling Craig Livingstone, the former Director of White House Personnel Security. Livingstone resigned from his post yesterday.

Don Gonyea Reports On Airbag Safety And The Agreement Yesterday
between the big-3 carmakers to accelerate research into "smart" airbags. The new systems, tentatively planned to be installed starting in 1999, would use sensors to tell the airbag how fast and with how much force to deploy. Public hearings on airbag safety will be held today in Washington.
John McChesney Reports That The Growing Number Of Internet Users
is causing problems for local telephone companies, and their customers. The telephone networks were designed for relatively short voice communication, not the lengthy data transfers common on the internet. The local phone companies have complained to the FCC that the internet access providers should be treated just like long-distance carriers.
