Kentucky teacher turns invasive carp into food for injured birds of prey
Carp have increasingly become a nuisance in waterways across the country. A southern Kentucky high school teacher and his students are using the invasive fish to feed injured raptors, like bald eagles, vultures and hawks.

UK hellbender study uses new detection method to try and find salamanders’ current habitats
Hellbender salamanders used to be common in streams across Kentucky, but their numbers have been on the decline in recent years. A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Kentucky tested a new way of detecting these amphibians to try and pinpoint exactly where in the commonwealth they can still be found.

Rebecca Hersher (she/her) is a reporter on NPR's Science Desk, where she reports on outbreaks, natural disasters, and environmental and health research. Since coming to NPR in 2011, she has covered the Ebola outbreak in West Africa, embedded with the Afghan army after the American combat mission ended, and reported on floods and hurricanes in the U.S. She's also reported on research about puppies.
