MSU Students, Faculty Hold Ferguson Demonstration

In a peaceful rally at MSU today, a group of Murray State students and staff wanted to raise awareness of ongoing unrest in Ferguson, Missouri.

The rally also aimed to spread the story of Michael Brown, an unarmed black 18-year old killed by Missouri police earlier this month. MSU Professor Joshua Adair says the issues of racial inequality and police militarization motivated attendees.

"While that community is the focus of much attention right now, many of the issues surrounding the death of Mike Brown are prevalent in communities across this country -- including those in our region -- and we hope to raise the level of awareness and sense of civic engagement so that people will feel empowered to work for change," Adair said.

Those in attendance chanted and held signs. Red roses were placed on the walkway to honor Brown and all victims of gun violence.

Participant and MSU Student Jessica Brown says unity is the key.

If you stand in solidarity with each other, that is the most powerful thing for change," Brown said.

"People coming together and realizing that we’re not that different, and that if we just care about each other, you can move mountains."

Brown says she hopes the efforts of all those involved will help bring justice to the Ferguson community.

The shooting remains under investigation by Missouri and federal officials.
