Kentucky nonprofits are trying to raise as much money as they can before midnight, Eastern time, as part of Kentucky Gives Day.
The event is organized by the Kentucky Nonprofit Network and hands out prizes to the organizations that collect the most money over the 24-hour period. Prizes are also given to the nonprofit that has the highest number of contributors and as well as the one that gets the most retweets in their efforts.
Amber Lyvers is the development director at the Elizabethtown chapter of Feeding America, which provides food to 42 counties in central and western Kentucky, including McCracken, Graves and Fulton counties. She says all the money they take in Tuesday will go to their backpack program.
“That program supports child hunger,” Lyvers said. “It helps fight child hunger by providing these kids with food for the weekends when they can’t get those school meals that they, sadly, often rely on.”
Lyvers said her organization has focused on social media to spread the word about Kentucky Gives Day.
“We encourage our supporters to spread the word," Lyvers said. "Whether that be sharing on Facebook or forwarding emails or just talking to their friends about supporting us and why they should.”
