Murray State Softball Finishes Second in OVC

Murray State Athletics

Murray State had its 2012 season come to a close Saturday morning, dropping its second game at the OVC Softball Championships in a 5-3 defeat against Tennessee Tech in the final game of the elimination bracket.

Tennessee Tech (26-31), the visiting team on the scoreboard, took advantage of a fielding error in its first at-bat as Brittney Spalding singled to right with two outs and runners on first and second, scoring Melody Christian to take a 1-0 lead.

Sarah Anderson put the Racers back into the game in the bottom of the second on the team’s first hit, doubling into the gap in left center to score Mandi Kellerman from second to tie the game at 1-1.

The Golden Eagles broke the game open in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs in the inning as the first three batters reached base and a Chanelle Spalding double scored a pair as TTU jumped ahead 5-1.

The Racers were able to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the sixth as Alexa Becker and Mandi Kellerman reached on singles, and Ellyn Troup drew a full-count walk with one out to load the bases. Tennessee Tech traded an out for a run in getting the inning’s second out, choosing to tag Leslie Bridges on a slow ground ball down the first base line while letting Becker score from third without a play at the plate.

Murray State (34-21) made some noise again in the bottom of the seventh as Christian Cox drew a lead-off walk and Megan Glosser poked an infield single past the TTU third baseman on her third hit of the game. Mo Ramsey reached on a fielder’s choice on a ground ball to the second baseman as TTU got the force out at second.  A ground out to short by Becker for the second out of the inning scored Cox from third, but that would be all the Racers could score as the game ended in a 5-3 MSU loss.
