Tennessee’s infant mortality rate has dipped since 2019 but remains significantly and persistently higher than the national average, a new report published by the state’s health department found.

The number of women who die during pregnancy or in the first year after giving birth has increased across the country in the last few decades. That’s after centuries of decline.

Early reports found death rates as high as 90% among COVID-19 patients on ventilators. But some hospitals are now reporting mortality lower than 30%.
