The Governor's Office of Early Childhood is making nearly $200,000 available to strengthen early childhood advisory councils and to promote school readiness. 

The money is being divvied up in grants of nearly $50,000 each to fund four regional initiatives to improve education and health services for Kentucky's youngest citizens. 

Gov. Steve Beshear announced Wednesday that Clinton, Adair, Cumberland and Russell counties will share one of the grants. Morehead State University will work with Bracken, Lewis, Lawrence and Martin counties on another. Madison, Estill, Powell and Lee counties also will receive a grant, as will Todd, Christian, Muhlenberg and Hopkins counties.

The Delta Regional Authority is sweetening the pot for cross-state applications for federal grants to strengthen training partnerships between community colleges and employers. 

Acting U.S. Labor Secretary Seth Harris said Friday that $474.5 million is available nationwide under the third round of the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grants program. 

Four west Kentucky riverports are receiving most of about $400,000 in state grants to perform repairs to their facilities. The Paducah/McCracken County, Hickman/Fulton County, Henderson County, and Owensboro ports are matching the state money, most of which will go to dock and rail repair. Paducah/McCracken County is getting the largest share, with $150,000.

The city of Sturgis, Kentucky will purchase treated water from the Union County Water District with the help of state funds. Governor Steve Beshear announced a new $986,000 state grant today, as well as an additional $3-million from the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority. The current outdated water system has received 33 Notices of Violations for unsafe levels of methane and acids found in the water in the past. Water rates will not increase for Sturgis residents.
