Here's a schedule of Halloween programming on WKMS. Halloween specials start this Saturday! We'll update this list as more program information becomes available. This is what we've got so far:
October 25
8 p.m. - Beyond the Edge Halloween Show: Three hours of songs about ghosts, werewolves, vampires, and... that's enough, right? Tracy features music by Pavement, Cat Power and Nick Cave always has something scary.
11 p.m. - Weekend Energy Halloween: One of Matt's favorite mixes all year... Tune in for zombie madness, headless dancers, surfing ghosts, lustful vampires, and a giant killer blob.
October 29
9 a.m. - Diane Rehm Show: Readers Review, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" by Washington Irving. A conversation on what some call America's first horror story. More about this episode
11 a.m. - Sounds Good: Halloween readings from Edgar Allen Poe and Mary Shelley, to inspire classic and frightful visions in your mind's-eye. Read by faculty of Murray State University's Department of Theatre, Daryl Phillipy (11:15 a.m.) and Lissa Graham-Schneider (12:15 p.m.)
October 30
11 a.m. - Halloween Sounds Good: Tracy devotes the entire show to Halloween related music.
9 p.m. - The Jive House Halloween: Join Brad and John for a Halloween edition featuring songs about Chicken Heads, Wolves, Bayou Fires and Superstition. Hear spooky and funky tunes from Gene "Bowlegs" Miller, The Meters, The Undisputed Truth and others.
October 31 - Halloween
Noon - Red Ember Live Lunch on Sounds Good: Paducah-based indie folk band Red Ember. This eclectic band puts a focus on instrumentation and emotional vocal harmonies. More about this Live Lunch
1 p.m. - Science Friday: The spooky side of science today. Why screeching violins and rumbling bass notes make you shiver - a listen to scary music. Also, the science behind haunted houses - why some people like a good scare. Ira also talks with guests on topics: ebola, why chocolate improves memory and a comet that smells like rotten eggs.
3 p.m. - Fresh Air: "Enter the Funhouse of Fear" in a conversation with master horror writer Stephen King.
9 p.m. - House Blend Halloween: Join David Weatherly for some spooky tunes and creepy tracks from The Bird & The Bee, RJD2, Thievery Corporation and Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited!
11 p.m. - Retro Cocktail Hour Halloween Spooktacular: Chockful of monster pop, groovy ghosts and other music from beyond the grave. It's easily the most popular episode of Retro Cocktail Hour all year.
November 1
1 p.m. - Rick's Kitchen Sink: 'The Day of the Dead Special' featuring two hours of frightening music by Grateful Dead, Tito & Tarantula, Wall of Voodoo, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Vampire Beach Babes, Screamin' Jay Hawkins and Tom Waits.
5 p.m. - A Prairie Home Companion: The Joke Show "Three Priests, Two Penguins, and One Chicken" The Joke Show returns in a live broadcast from Pantages Theatre in Minneapolis, featuring tones of jokes and with special guests the Scottish music group Battlefield Band and jazz preservationist Vince Giordano.
November 2
9 a.m. - Radiolab: "The War of the Worlds" caused panic when it aired in 1938, and it's continued to fool people since -- from Santiago, Chile to Buffalo, NY, to a particularly disastrous evening in Quito, Ecuador. This hour of Radiolab: a deep dive into one of the most controversial moments in broadcasting history.
