Photography, Ceramics, Silkscreening, Animation, More at MSU's Summer Art Workshop

Summer Art Workshop 2015 Flyer

Rising 9th graders through high school graduates from around the country enjoy a fast-paced art workshop experience with no prior art training required with Murray State art faculty in mid-June. On Sounds Good, Kate Lochte learns more about this week-long event with printmaking faculty and workshop director Nicole Hand and how to get on the mailing list for next year's workshop.

There are 43 students involved in the Summer Art Workshop this summer at Murray State University and a waiting list. This year, 22 scholarships were awarded through a grant from Murray State's Regional Outreach Grant Program and area arts-focused people and organizations. Students attending this year will be from Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Minnesota, Florida and Indiana.

The workshops are taught in a way where if you have art experience, it will push you farther and if you have no art experience, you will gain that basic knowledge in a hands-on approach.

This year's workshop includes digital photography and Photoshop editing with Sarah Smith, an introduction to clay hand-forming and terra sigillatta with John Utgaard, hand drawing and photo-silkscreen with Scott Cook, digital animation with Jim Bryant and "How Sweet It Is: A Short History of Food in Art" with Katrina Kuntz.

"We get lots of art majors who came to the summer art workshop so we hopes this plants some seeds of what they could do if they choose Murray State."

Nicole Hand says she's already working on developing next year's workshop, hopefully involving new technologies on the Murray State campus like 3D printing. Information is posted to the Murray State website and flyers go out in the fall. To be put on this year's waiting list or to get information in the fall about next summer's workshop, contact Janeen Winters at 270-809-3662.
