'Hunt for the Wilderpeople', 'Captain Fantastic' Coming to Maiden Alley Cinema

Posters: Defender Films/Bleecker Street

On Thursday's Sounds Good, John Null caught up with Maiden Alley Cinema's John Holt to discuss a couple movies with some common themes coming to Paducah's arthouse theater in the next two weeks. The New Zealand-set comic adventure Hunt for the Wilderpeople and drama Captain Fantastic both feature characters that head into the wild, for different reasons.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows, HBO's Flight of the Conchords) and is about rebellious 13-year-old Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison) who is placed in a foster home in the countryside. After a while, to avoid another foster home placement, he runs away into the wilderness, accompanied by his foster guardian (Sam Neill). They bond, while avoiding law enforcement agencies that think Ricky has been kidnapped. Hunt for the Wilderpeople starts Friday, August 19 and plays through Tuesday, August 23.

Captain Fantastic stars Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings, A History of Violence) as a man raising six children completely off-the-grid. When their mother dies, Mortensen's character is forced to introduce them to society. The film co-stars Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Kathryn Hahn (Afternoon Delight) and Steve Zahn (Dallas Buyers Club). It's written and directed by actor-turned-director Matt Ross (Silicon Valley). Captain Fantastic starts Friday, August 26 and plays through Thursday, September 1.
