Hopkinsville Author, WWII Veteran Michael Freeland Dies At 94

An author and World War II veteran from Hopkinsville died Tuesday at the age of 94. 

Michael Freeland served in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne as a combat medic during the Battle of the Bulge. He also served on the beaches of Normandy after the Normandy landing. Freeland spoke with Kate Lochte on Sounds Good in 2014 after the publication of his book “Homeplace: Finding Poetry in Everyday Places.”

Freeland’s other book “Blood River to Berlin - The World War II Journal of an Army Medic and Time and the River - A Memoir,” was published in 2007.

Freeland was a native of Henry County, Tennessee. He taught basic public speaking and interpersonal communication at Austin Peay State University. He also established the first independent full-time FM stereo radio station in McKenzie, Tennessee in 1963.

His service is Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church. Visitation begins at 10.
