Fall AQS Paducah QuiltWeek To Feature ‘World’s Largest Quilt Cake’

American Quilter's Society via Facebook

The American Quilter’s Society is recruiting a pastry chef featured on TLC’s Cake Boss to design and bake the world’s largest quilt cake for Fall QuiltWeek’s 35th Anniversary next month.

Executive show director Bonnie Browning said Mauro Castano will be at QuiltWeek on Thursday, Sept. 12 for a meet and greet at 1:30 p.m. At 2:30 p.m. local officials and sponsor Janome America will present the cake for attendees to eat.

“It’s like four feet by eight feet, six feet tall and it weighs about 2,000 pounds. Yeah, so it’ll be a big cake,” Browning said.

According to BakeMag.com, the cake will feature a sewing machine, scissors and a toolbox on top of a sheet cake designed to resemble a quilt.

Browning said the anniversary will feature previous Best-of-Show-winning quilts presented in the Dome Pavilion. She said the ‘Through the Years’ exhibit will offer a look into how quilting has progressed over the past couple decades.

“In the beginning I think the designs were probably simpler and there wasn’t as much quilting. As our equipment, our sewing machines, have gotten better and more computerized, certainly there is more quilting on the quilts today, even the hand-quilted quilts,” Browning said.

QuiltWeek includes contests in 15 categories and judges will pick the top three quilts from each category. Browning said public voting opens on the Monday, Sept. 9 to choose a Best of Show winner out of the 15 first place quilts selected by the judges. She said Best of Show will be announced Wednesday morning. QuiltWeek runs from Sept. 11 to 14 in the Schroeder Expo Center.

Browning said she expects a turnout of roughly 15,000 attendees.
