International Career Expert Shares Tips on "Going Global" Tonight at WKCTC

Stacie Berdan, International Career Expert, Facebook

Raising Global Children is the newest book of author, business executive and international careers expert Stacie Berdan who presents strategies and tactics for success in a global marketplace at WKCTC this evening. Berdan says its important for everyone in today's workplace to become global thinkers, whether working abroad or bringing global thinking into your workplace. She shares some of her experiences working with multi-national clients with Kate Lochte on Sounds Good.

Stacie Berdan, international careers expert, seasoned global executive and author, comes to WKCTC in Paducah to speak about "going global" tonight at 7, her presentation is in Crounse Hall 101 and is open to all. Refreshments and a book signing follow her lecture.

"Why would a little girl like you want to go to India?"

This was a question Berdan was asked by the CEO of her company when being the only one in the room to volunteer moving to the Mumbai office. Because she believes in "putting up your hand often and early" as a means to success, she cited economics, how clients were going there, how India (at the time) had a greater consumer purchasing rate than China and the importance of the country in the global sphere. She ended up working in Hong Kong. Since then, globalization has ramped up at an incredible pace.

Berdan says its important for businesses large and small to have global thinkers. Many years ago, this meant picking up and moving abroad or opening an overseas office. Now, workers need to be global thinkers, demonstrate international experience, speak foreign languages if possible (especially Mandarin, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese and Spanish). All workers need a global mindset, she says, and that parents can present this insight to their kids at an early age.

Show the World to Your Kids

As parents bring up their kids in a world of increasing globalization, Berdan says it's crucial to give kids access to international experiences - teaching them that people have different customs, speak different languages, look different, eat different foods and understanding at an early age that everyone must work together is important in gaining a global perspective and having global success in their lifetimes. Berdan says her own daughters are learning Spanish and Chinese, though she herself cannot speak a foreign language. She shares stories where this has come at a cost: an experience in Japan that nearly caused a deal to fall through and a miscommunication in India where she had to give up her client to someone else. She says these were valuable learning experiences for personal growth in the global marketplace.

Stacie Berdan has written four books on the intersection of globalization and careers, has appeared on NBC's Today Show, CNN International, APM'sMarketplace and other national media. She has worked in more than 50 countries and continues to consult with companies on global issues.
