A national gas supplier plans to build a liquid hydrogen plant in Calvert City.
The plant will be the first of its kind for Airgas. It could produce up to ten tons of liquid hydrogen a day for variety of uses from the production of glass, metals, chemicals, electrical power, and food products to applications for hydrogen fuel cells.
The plant is set to be up and running in the summer of 2016 and will neighbor the new Air Separation Unit announced in May. These will be the first Airgas facilities in Calvert City. Figures from company and county officials initially indicated the creation of upwards of 40 new jobs. Airgas Spokesperson Sarah Boxler says the company will employ 12 to 15 associates between the two new facilities.
