Step back in time with an old-fashioned soap making workshop at Discovery Park of America on Saturday, June 28.

To fit the old-fashioned theme, this class will take place in Wade Cabin, also known as the Craftsman Cabin, located in Discovery Park’s Settlement area. This introductory class will guide you through the process of making cold process soap from scratch, just like in the pioneer days.

In this immersive experience, you’ll discover:

• The history and tradition of handmade soap
• Basic soap chemistry and how it works
• Important safety measures when working with lye (sodium hydroxide)
• How to measure, mix and monitor temperatures
• Tools and equipment needed, including soap molds and liners

Participants will work together to make a large batch of soap—and each guest will take home a bar of the finished product. Whether you’re curious about historical practices or eager to try something new, this workshop is a perfect blend of science, history and creativity.
