You can start your week off right with a little self love! Slow down, breathe, and make something just for you. This program series will be the first Monday of each month from 5:30-6:30. Murray State University College of Humanities and Fine Arts is pleased to announce the next installment in the Humanities+ Series, “Life Lab: Hometowns & Histories,” on Tuesday, November 3 from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in the Breathitt Room of Pogue Library, located at the corner of 15th Street and Olive Boulevard in Murray, Kentucky. The event is free and open to the campus community and the public.

The Humanities+ series was created to showcase how we can flourish in the world today. Through lectures, workshops, and cultural events, the series serves to foster creative, intellectual, and educational opportunities. These events are meant to cultivate skills we need to learn and live. Life Lab events are a series of technology-free experiences offered throughout the school year to help people (dis)connect, reflect, and build resilience.

Pogue Special Collections Library is a place to interact with unique research materials—such as the papers and works of Kentucky author Jesse Stuart and historian and biographer Forrest Pogue—and for quiet study. Inside is the Wells T. Lovett Grand Reading Room, which has been voted one of the best places to study on campus. Pogue also serves as a public research center on local history and genealogy, which participants in “Hometowns & Histories” will have access to for the event. Library staff will also be on hand to answer questions and help participants follow their curiosities.

Dr. Jeff McLaughlin, Professor and Director of Archives and Special Collections at Murray State University, will lead the session, which he states is focused on encouraging students, faculty, and the public to engage with archival material and see how fascinating research can be.

“There are some great stories that just won't get told unless we start digging in local archives and put all of the puzzle pieces together ourselves.”

We will explore the various ways drawing can be used as a medium. Students will do still life drawing, create transfers, and explore their imagination with fun illustration work.

Learn to throw! This 8-week beginner pottery class builds essential wheel-throwing skills. Perfect for new and seasoned beginners.

8 Weeks

Tuesdays. Class Dates: 10/13, 10/20, 10/27, 11/3 11/10, 11/17, 11/24, 12/1

It's true, throwing on the wheel is not as easy as it looks but with the right guidance, it can be incredibly rewarding. This 8-week class will focus on all the beginning techniques to center and form a successful pot on the wheel. Through group demos and individualized support, you will learn how to center, shape, trim, and glaze your pots. From mugs to bowls and possibly plates and tips on throwing taller and wider, you will learn the process of how to take a ball of clay and turn it into a functional piece of pottery from start to finish. Join studio potter Sara Ballek as she breaks down a thorough step-by-step approach to pottery making.

Wear clothes you don't mind getting on (it will wash out) and closed-toed shoes. For wheel work, skip jewelry, roll up your sleeves, tie long hair back, and keep nails trimmed for the best experience. Clay and all tools needed for the class are provided by Paducah School of Art and Design.

The library’s ESL program provides a welcoming and supportive environment where the participants improve their English skills through conversation, reading, writing, and listening activities. The program focuses on real-life communication, helping participants build confidence for everyday situations such as work, school, and community interactions. Open to all levels, it promotes lifelong learning, cultural exchange, and community connection.

Unfortunately will be having a limit of 20 persons per class.

Explore sewing for cosplay, costumes, or everyday. Learn to read patterns & create your own apron while building essential, lifelong skills.

There's a wonderful, wide, world of sewing opportunities available in both theatre and out in the world. Whether it is making your favorite cosplay; a character for Halloween; clothing for yourself; or you see costuming/dressmaking as a possible career path, learning how to read and properly utilize a commercial pattern is the next step in mastering lifelong skills. Upon completion of the course students will have made their own apron, building on and utilizing all of the skills they learned in Intro to Machine and Hand Sewing.

Prerequisite: Must have a working knowledge of hand and machine stitching.

Every Thursday afternoon is a craft day, a wonderful chance for kids and their grown-ups to come together, get creative, and enjoy some fun with a special craft activity. (While supplies last!)

Learn the basics of assembling the perfect charcuterie board for the holidays. For ages 18 and older. Registration required.

It's time for Clay Date, a hands-on, spin-filled night where you'll hop on the pottery wheel and create your very own bowl. No experience? No worries—we’ll guide you step-by-step (or spin-by-spin)!

Everyone gets their own wheel, chooses a favorite glaze, and your clay creation will be kiln-fired and ready for pickup in a few weeks. Clay washes off, but the memories stick—so wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting a little messy.

We can’t promise a masterpiece for the ages, but we can promise laughs, creativity, and one unforgettable night out!
