The Murray Police Department is warning of an email scam that says recipients must pay for alleged traffic violations through an online link.

The department said in a release on Wednesday emails sent to Murray residents claim recipients have to pay within 72 hours for violations that may involve photo-enforced red light camera enforcement. The emails contain a city, state and time and ask the victim to not mail the payment but to pay online through a link.

Murray Police said the city does not use traffic cameras and any cameras on Kentucky roadways are for monitoring purposes only. Kentucky law prohibits officers from ticketing drivers unless they see the violation first hand.

The department said citations are never sent via email. They said if you receive an email or regular mail involving criminal or traffic violations that you are not aware of to contact the agency listed.
