ACLU-TN Advises Schools On Game Day Prayers

Praying for your high school football team is OK. But the American Civil Liberties Union says those before-game prayers should not be sponsored by public schools.

The Tennessee chapter of the civil rights group sent a letter to 135 school systems this week saying it has learned that a number of Tennessee high schools are sponsoring prayers at their games.

The letter says it’s a violation of the First Amendment for faculty, coaches, administrators or clergy to lead prayers at public school events.

It goes on to say that students have the right to worship and pray according to the dictates of their own consciences. The letter invites officials to contact ACLU with questions.
