Graves School Board Finalizes Auction Details for Cuba Elementary Sale

Paul Schaumburg

The Graves County Board of Education has finalized plans to auction Cuba Elementary School's facility next month.

During last night’s special meeting, the Board chose Bunch Brothers Auction and Realty Company of Wingo to conduct the sale.

Last year, officials voted to close the school citing low enrollment which never exceeded 200 students a year.

Superintendent Kim Harrison said the move to close Cuba was a difficult one but a necessary financial decision.

Last month, a group of disgruntled residents sued the board for allegedly failing to follow proper procedures to close the school. Graves officials say the litigation won’t affect the property sale.

The school is expecting to receive $62,000 for the property, based on the chief financial officer’s appraisal.

The auction is 3:30 PM, June 18th with an official closure June 30th.

Cuba’s 155 students will integrate into Wingo and Sedalia elementary schools at the beginning of the next school year.
