Crittenden Schools to Purchase a Second Propane Bus

Crittenden County Schools will purchase a second school bus powered by propane gas, as part of a state-approved pilot project for saving energy.

Laura Beacon, the grant administrator for the initiative, testified before the Interim Joint Contract Review Committee in Frankfort Tuesday, which aired on KET.  She said the district already has one propane bus and is saving over $2 a gallon on fuel.

“They’re about $15,000 more expensive than the average diesel bus,” Beacon said. “The real efficiency, as far as cost goes, is with the price of propane versus diesel. The cost of propane is about $1.40, $1.60 a gallon, whereas the price of diesel is about $3.90.”

Beacon said the propane bus doesn’t get as many miles per gallon as a diesel vehicle but it’s still more cost-efficient and is reducing pollution.
