POSTCARD: Mom's Thoughts on Her Child's First Day of School...Ever.

Lance Dennee

The chatter of parents and children returned to the hall of Clark Elementary in Paducah for the first day of classes. The first day of kindergarten offers the familiar scene of parents dropping off Kindergartners for the first time.

Mother Jennifer Tucker knew leaving her daughter, Claire, would be challenging despite having seen others do it many times.

“I used to be a teacher, so I would see moms come with tears in their eyes, and I thought, ‘it’s going to be alright until it’s your baby,’” Tucker said. “I’ve seen them do it all day and I know she’s going to be fine. But then I worry, is she going to know where to sit at lunch, is she going to be scared on the playground, and is she going to get nervous. It’s just a lot of questions for a mom to worry about.”

“I went through her school day with her. How is she going to sit in her desk and what to expect at lunch,” Tucker said. “It’s going to be fun and exciting to watch her come home and seeing that excitement in her eyes. She’s just ready for a new adventure.”

Claire said she was excited especially to go to the cafeteria.

Paducah Independent School Superintendent Donald Shively said Clark has over 500 students this year, adding an additional kindergarten. School districts all over the region begin their first day of classes this week and next week.
