Sex, Marijuana, Alcohol Among Topics in Baptist Health Paducah Addiction Symposium

Baptist Health Paducah presents its 8th Annual Addiction & Compulsive Behaviors Symposium for healthcare professionals on Saturday, October 18th. Topics include marijuana use, sex addiction, alcoholism and youth drug addiction. On Sounds Good, Kate Lochte learns more about it from Dr. Patrick Withrow, director of outreach, and Maria Hill, director of education.

The symposium is a day-long training session geared towards professionals that assess, interact or treat these disorders, from physicians and nurses, to therapists and counselors. The broad spectrum of presentation seeks to identify and understand various aspects of addiction that affect all aspects of economic and social strata, and increasingly found in younger ages. Area treatment centers will also be exhibiting.

The symposium features nationally and internationally known faculty:

  • Dr. Randy Adair - A physician, DO and PhD from New Mexico - will be discussing along with his partner Eric Martin, the endocannabinoid system, specifically all things marijuana, it's widening use and federal changes surrounding it. Adair is an expert in the field, and this presentation is expected to be two hours.
  • Dr. Burns Brady - An MD from Louisville - He spearheaded the Kentucky Physicians Health Foundation. An international speaker and expert on the treatment of alcoholism. This presentation specifically covers the science behind sponsorship, meetings and 12-step programs.
  • Dr. Terry Alley - An MD and FASAM from Nashville - Terry is the the Medical Director of the Healthcare Professionals program at Cumberland Heights. He will speak on youth addiction, how the youth get their hands on drugs. Also, he'll be looking into aspects of how drugs affect young brains.
  • Mary Deitch - A JD and Psy.D from Pennsylvania - She is the Director of the Extended Care Unit for KeyStone Center. She's an expert on sex addiction. Her presentation will be identifying and treating sex addiction. It's a topic not discussed very often but an issue that comes up a lot. KeyStone Center is a residential center for healing sexual compulsivity and trauma.

Healthcare professionals and educators are invited to hear nationally-known experts speak on addiction and compulsive behaviors from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Heart Center auditorium.
