The Kentucky Board of Education has voted to dismiss its proposal to take control of Kentucky's largest school district.
News outlets report the board's vote was unanimous Wednesday after interim Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis described details of a settlement between the department and Jefferson County Public Schools.
The Jefferson County school board approved the settlement Monday night.
Lewis had recommended takeover of the 100,000-student district, citing low-performing schools and achievement gaps between black and white students.
The settlement would give Lewis final veto authority over any policy or procedure changes related to early childhood education. The district also agreed to create and staff an independent office to investigate any complaints related to the district.
Lewis will also have final say on corrective action plans for areas identified as deficient.
