Diesel Spill Sheen on Ohio River Dissipates

Matt Markgraf, WKMS

Marathon Pipe Line says the leading edge of a diesel fuel sheen on the Ohio River has dissipated near Paducah. The company confirms one of its pipes was the source of a 48-thousand gallon diesel fuel spill on the Wabash River in southern Illinois over the weekend.

Marathon’s Shane Pochard says the cause of the leak has not been determined. He says the pipeline runs from a refinery in Robinson, Illinois to a terminal in Mount Vernon and was already shut down when the spill was discovered.

“It was in operational shutdown, which means it just, it didn’t need to be run at that time. When we were made aware it happened to be shut down per normal schedule,” Pochard said.

Pochard says Marathon is monitoring air and water quality along the Wabash and Ohio Rivers and tests indicate no negative impact to wildlife or drinking water.

The U.S. EPA did not immediately respond to calls.
