UPDATE: The U.S. Coast Guard is now permitting some commercial boat traffic under the Eggners Ferry Bridge work zone. According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, some smaller tow boats are being allowed to move through with the assistance of a helper boat provided by Johnson Brothers Construction - the contractor on the project.
Workers are still securing the 5 million pound steel truss put in place Tuesday for the new Eggners Ferry Bridge.
Pleasure and fishing boats may travel under the new bridge at the outer edges of the work area. The contractor is asking boaters to maintain a safe distance from the main channel work site and use appropriate caution around the area.
Commercial tow boat traffic will remain limited until the barges used to float the main span of the new bridge have been removed.
KYTC ordered the 48-hour closure for water traffic near the bridge Tuesday morning with the goal of reopening the water Thursday morning, but inclement weather delayed work Wednesday night and KYTC made the call to suspend efforts to avoid injuries.
The existing US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge remains open to vehicle traffic.
