Explosive Demolition at Eggners Tuesday Afternoon

KYTC

KYTC officials say today's underwater demolition of Pier 3 of the Old Eggners Ferry Bridge will occur around midday Tuesday.

Traffic on US68/KY80 will be halted, the closure is expected to last about 10 to 15 minutes.

There will be a 1,000 ft. clear zone around the blast radius. All boat traffic through the construction zone will also be halted.  Once each pier has been imploded, the demo crew and inspectors will check the new bridge for any damage or debris before restoring traffic flow.

Monday story:

This morning's planned demolition of two piers of the old Eggner's Ferry Bridge has been rescheduled.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesman Keith Todd says demolition contractors decided to push back the controlled underwater explosion several hours.

Todd says he's still trying to determine an exact time contractors plan to close traffic on the new Eggner's Ferry Bridge, but says motorists can expect a closure somewhere in the 2 to 3 o'clock afternoon timeframe.

The closure is expected to last about 10 to 15 minutes.

There will be a 1,000 ft. clear zone around the blast radius. All boat traffic through the construction zone will also be halted.  Once each pier has been imploded, the demo crew and inspectors will check the new bridge for any damage or debris before restoring traffic flow.

After the blast, crews will begin pulling debris up from the lake bottom.

Another blast is scheduled for Tuesday morning between 7 and 9 am.
