The chairman of a legislative committee investigating Republican Governor Matt Bevin has resigned in protest because he said the outgoing Democratic Speaker of the House has refused to let him subpoena the governor's chief accuser.
Speaker Greg Stumbo created the committee in October to investigate claims by Democratic state Representative Russ Meyer that Bevin canceled a transportation project in his district as punishment for refusing to switch parties. But Meyer refused to testify under oath before the committee.
Chairman Jim Wayne said Thursday that Stumbo denied his request to subpoena Meyer. Wayne's resignation could effectively end the House Investigatory Committee on Executive Action's inquiry.
Democratic state Representative Arnold Simpson tried to dissolve the committee Thursday, but couldn't because there was not a quorum present.
