A Kentucky attorney has cleared a major hurdle in his bid to join a federal appeals
court. John Bush’s nomination was approved Thursday by the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Bush was nominated by President Trump to serve on the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals which hears cases from Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Michigan. The 52-year-old Bush is from Louisville and currently works in private practice. His nomination was criticized by many Democrats, who objected to blog postings by Bush that compared the Roe Versus Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion to the Dred Scott decision upholding slavery. His nomination must still be confirmed by the full Senate. Bush is the second Kentuckian to be nominated for a seat on the 6th Circuit. In March, President Trump nominated U.S. District Judge Amul Thapar, who serves in the Eastern District of Kentucky. Thapar's nomination is also pending in the Senate.
