The Battle of Shiloh was a major battle in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, fought April 6–7, 1862, in southwestern Tennessee. A Union army under Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant had moved via the Tennessee River deep into Tennessee. Confederate forces under Generals Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard launched a surprise attack on Grant at Pittsburg Landing. The Confederates achieved considerable success on the first day, but were ultimately defeated on the second day and were forced to retreat from the bloodiest battle in United States history up to that time, both sides suffering large casualties. Grant was criticized for recklessness in this battle and an outcry put pressure on the White House to have him removed, prompting Lincoln to say, "I can't spare this man; he fights."

“The Archaeology of Mammoth Cave” is the topic of tomorrow’s lecture at the Fort Massac State Park Visitor’s Center. Dr. Kenneth Carstens of Murray State University will be speaking on the history surrounding the world’s longest-known cave system, located in central Kentucky. The presentation begins at 1, and a question-and-answer session will follow. Admission is free.

The 23rd Annual Quilt Show goes on display Monday at the Pennyroyal Area Museum. View a collection of locally-owned quilts old and new. The exhibit will be on display through April 28. The Pennyroyal Area Museum is located at 217 East 9th Street in Hopkinsville. Hours are 8:30 to 4:30, Monday through Friday.
