Kala Dunn is a native of Princeton, Ky. She’s a 2006 graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy with a concentration in flute performance and a 2010 graduate of Murray State University with a B.M. in piano performance. She lives in Hamlin, Ky.

Ways to Connect

The Summer in the Park program begins today at Murray’s Central Park and runs through July 15th. The program is open to all children through age 18; children under 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Lunch is served from 11 to noon at the Bailey Pavilion, and educational programs follow from noon to 1. 

The McCracken County Public Library launches its “Locally Grown” themed summer reading lineup with a live performance by the award-winning blues act the Alonzo Pennington Band. The performance is this Thursday night at 7 in the library garden.

Land Between the Lakes offers canoe and kayak rentals for use on Honker Lake beginning this weekend. Hourly rentals start at 10 a.m., and all boats must be returned by 4:30 p.m. Visitors must check in at the Nature Station in order to rent a canoe or kayak. The Northwest Tennessee Racquet Club offers summer tennis programs in Paris, Tennessee, for all ages. Instruction is available for all levels of players, with summer camps for kids and cardio-focused programs for adults and teens. More information available on the club’s Facebook page.

The Woodlands Nature Station at Land Between the Lakes holds a Wildlife Celebration during Memorial Day Weekend. Special programs include visits with Smokey Bear, wildlife encounters, canoe trips, scavenger hunts, crafts, and more. Reservations are required for canoe trips. The Yeiser Art Center in Paducah offers a variety of Summer Youth Art Camps. Sessions are available for kids ages 5 to 12, with classes on clay, fibers, printmaking, painting, papier-mâché, folded paper sculptures, mixed media sculptures, dying, stamping, printmaking, collage, and more. Kentucky Dam Village State Resort Park holds its Arts and Crafts Show this Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show features handcrafted artwork, artist demonstrations, and food concessions and is located at the Old Beach near the Convention Center. 

The Homeplace at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area offers Children's Day tomorrow afternoon from 1 to 4. Kids are invited to play the old-time way with 1850s-style games, homemade toys, and more. Find event details on the Land Between the Lakes website

The 106th Bill Wells Make a Difference Day this Saturday from 9 to 1 at Roy Stewart Stadium in Murray. Items to be collected include paper, cardboard, eyeglasses, aluminum cans, cell phones, ink jet cartridges, clothes, shoes, prescription drugs, plastics, glass, motor oil, books, and gently used sports gear. The shredder is on site for the disposal of personal documents.

“Justice for All” is held this Thursday night at 6 at the Robert Cherry Civic Center. The evening of discussion focuses on criminal justice reform and includes a panel of professionals in the fields of criminal justice, social work, psychology, and the ministry. Admission is free, with dinner and live entertainment provided.
