Crisis funding will be available in January to aid Purchase residents with high heating bills.
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP is administered by West Kentucky Allied Services and runs through March 31, 2018, or until funds run out.
WKAS Assistant Executive Director Tony Dowdy said the amount of allocated funds won’t be known until the beginning of the new year. He said the program serves Ballard, Calloway, Carlisle, Fulton, Graves, Hickman, McCracken and Marshall counties.
“Last year we serviced 5,000 households across the eight counties. That’s one of the reasons for us wanting to get the word out, so that people who are in need know that the funds are available.”
Eligible applicants receive benefits based on their income and primary fuel type. WKAS requires that the household have a "disconnect" notice from their utility company or prove that they are within four days of running out of their bulk fuel source. Applicants must also provide a social security card, proof of income for all household members and a metered utility bill.
Application for assistance can be made at a local West Kentucky Allied Services office.
