Paducah Public Schools in a release Tuesday said Paducah Middle School football players are quarantining after potentially being exposed to a positive COVID-19 case during a recent game.

The release states the Purchase District Health Department was notified that a Union County football player who played in seventh and eighth-grade games against Paducah Middle School on Sept. 29 tested positive for COVID-19. Paducah Public Schools Spokesperson Wayne Walden in a statement Wednesday said 47 students are quarantined as a result of the exposure. Walden said games and practices for the team are cancelled through Oct. 13, and that the district isn't considering changes for fall athletics at this time.

The release also states the health department is handling contact tracing with the school district, and that instructions for each student-athlete will come from the health department.

Calloway County Schools also recently quarantined high school football players after potential exposure to a positive case. State data as of Tuesday classifies the spread of COVID-19 in McCracken County as “accelerated.”

The Purchase District Health Department did not immediately return requests for comment regarding contact tracing following the game.
