Social media has transformed in the last twenty years from a personal networking platform to an extension of many businesses, ranging from small companies to international corporations. As more professional institutions incorporate social media in their business strategies, the question of how to regulate social media usage becomes increasingly important. MSU professor, Dr. Kevin Qualls, visits Sounds Good to discuss his new course over this trend, "Media Law Essentials for Business Leaders."
The first notable social media site was established in 1997, and online interpersonal platforms have since undergone several significant changes. With more businesses utilizing social media for public outreach and exposure, a new necessity for legal guidelines regarding ethical social media conduct has been created. Legalities such as copyright infringement, defamation, and others normally reserved for publishers (text, audio, etc.), have now come to include businesses publishing content to social media platforms.
Dr. Kevin Qualls will be offering a new course at Murray State University, originating from the Paducah campus and expanding to any campus with ITV operations, covering laws pertaining to social media usage. Primarily, the course will focus on the ethical considerations of using others' intellectual property and images. Awareness of social media etiquette, employee and employer social media usage regulations, and other similar learning opportunities will also be presented.
Dr. Qualls' course is open to any student or business leader looking to learn more about social media law, and it is also offered to attorneys for CLE credit. The class will meet Thursdays from 2 to 5 in the afternoon, with CLE opportunities taught by Qualls and other area attorneys from 4 pm to 5 pm. Attorneys, those pursuing an MBA, PR degree, finance degree, or those interested in educating themselves and their business in social media legalities, are all welcome to enroll.
